Governments agreed that the co-Chairs should summarize their positions - on cutting emissions, adaptation, climate finance and much more - in a single document, attributing each summary point to countries that support that position. While this approach doesn’t give us a clear path to a draft negotiating text, it does move us in the right direction. Countries will have the ability to see the full range of positions while avoiding lengthy and unmanageable compilation text or relying solely on the co-chairs interpretations of their carefully constructed positions. The same track of negotiations saw concrete proposals on how to take efforts to cut emissions in the near-term forward. In particular, the Peruvians laid out a vision for how the Lima meeting will move us from scoping opportunities to enabling and scaling climate action. >From the perspective of a UNFCCC wonk, all of the aforementioned is a good outcome. From the perspective of a regular person who cares about their family’s health and future, however, the transition to a clean energy world can’t come fast enough. The World Health Organization estimates that air pollution prematurely kills 7 million people per year (http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2014/air-pollution/en/) . By that measure, over the last 10 days of climate talks, as emissions from coal power plants to cars to charcoal cooking fires spewed greenhouse gases and a myriad of toxins into our air, nearly 200,000 precious lives were taken before their time. In the weeks before our Heads of Government meet in New York for the Climate Leaders Summit, more than 2 million more lives will be prematurely lost. Between now and this year’s Conference of Parties in Lima - where we only expect a draft of the next climate deal - we’ll say goodbye to 3.25 million fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. It’s no wonder that calls for a fast transition to a ‘net-zero emissions’ world are getting louder. Tomorrow, negotiations on the UNFCCC’s ongoing work continue and are expected to wrap. Governments inched toward a number of steps that need to happen in Lima later this year. And we hosted a few google hangouts with shortlisted candidates for our COP20 Fellowship. I wanted to send an update in case you missed that hangout, or in case you wanted a review of what was said during the hangout. Be forewarned, this is a long email. The Adopt a Negotiator Project First, we shared a bit of background on the Adopt a Negotiator project (AaN), which is part of the Global Call for Climate Action. AaN launched in the lead-up to international negotiations on a global climate treaty in 2009 in Copenhagen, asking a group of impressive young activists to track their countries’ roles in the negotiations and in their international response to climate change overall. As it happened, our 'negotiator trackers' made a big impression. In some cases they developed good relationships with media, some developed influential relationships with their governments, and most deepened their relationships and ability to contribute to climate movements in their country. What’s more, they combined these relationships and their talents to push their governments toward climate action. They leveraged media tools and platforms to help the public in their countries understand how climate issues were affecting their lives, as well as understand the actions their governments were taking or not taking in response. And they helped grow the capacity of the climate movement both during the negotiations and after. We’ve since continued to support negotiator trackers with Fellowships ever since; to date having awarded 60 fellowships to young leaders from 30 different countries. As we look toward the COP in Lima this December, we’re once again looking for people with the most potential to use key moments like the UN climate talks to 1) push governments, 2) engagi the public and 3) increase the movement’s capacity to adequately respond to the climate change challenge. We talked about the calendar and context Much of what you’ll read about on the Adopt a Negotiator website is focused on the path to a new global climate treaty, which is set to be signed in Paris at the end of 2015. This is the first time that every country who is party to the UN’s climate change Convention (UNFCCC) will make commitments to climate action under a single global agreement. The weeks and months leading up to Paris give us an opportunity to ensure the actions enshrined in those commitments and the actions preceding them are as ambitious and fair as possible. Between the recent negotiations in Bonn and the Conference of Parties in Paris next year, there are many key moments that we hope to help you leverage in that push. The first comes this September in New York. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is hosting heads of state from around the world, asking them to come with commitments to near-term climate action that could help unlock an upward spiral of climate action that pushes climate change to the top of the political agenda. The other high-profile moment comes just a couple short months later, when negotiators and other high-level government officials will meet in Lima for the Conference of Parties (COP20) where they have the potential to forge a draft deal that will pave the way for Paris. We talked about plans going forward Because there’s so much talent among our AaN applicants every year, we launched the Climate Tracker program to take the successes of our project and scale them to a wider group. We hope the effort can help us expand our support to more people, as well as broaden the scope of our impact to issues beyond the UNFCCC. The program itself will primarily include trainings, once-per-month actions, and eventually an expanded roster of ‘climate trackers’ who blog on key issues including and beyond the UNFCCC. Around 800 people applied for our COP20 Fellowship. Based on who we think has the potential to excel at delivering on one or more of the Adopt a Negotiator project’s goals (i.e. pushing governments, engaging the public & increasing the climate movement’s capacity), we’ve invited about 300 people to take part in the next phase of our application process as shortlisted candidates. We have funding to offer approximately 10 fellowships, which means this opportunity remains extremely competitive. We want to find the people who are most capable of taking advantage of the COP in Lima. And we also want to support all of you in taking advantage of some the key moments leading up to Lima, nationally and internationally. So we’ve decided the best way to do both things is to ask you to participate in the climate tracker program. It’s our hope that the trainings and opportunities for action help boost your efforts as a climate activist regardless of whether you are selected as a fellow. Most of the program is voluntary - trainings, for example - but we hope they’re useful. There will be 3 things that will be required of candidates who wish to be considered for a Fellowship: 1. You will be asked to get an editorial or opinion piece published on a local, regional or national news platform. 2. You will be asked to send us a short proposal for how you will use COP20 to push governments, engage the public and help grow the capacity of the climate movement. 3. You will be asked to make the most out of the upcoming Climate Leaders Summit in New York - maybe that will mean writing another editorial in a newspaper, maybe you’ll reach out to large audiences on a radio program, maybe you’ll get creative and organize some actions in your country's capital. The sky is the limit! We’ll use these and your application to choose our Lima team. How to proceed if you’re interested We hope you’re interested in this next phase! This week, we’re excited to announce the first of those training opportunities as part of our Climate Tracker Program! “Writing a Revolution” with Aya Chebbi and Chris Wright Our first training is exciting! It speaks directly to the enormous scale of the climate challenge and to our Climate Trackers’ primary tool - our voices. Aya Chebbi (http://aya-chebbi.blogspot.com) became a world renowned blogger during the Tunisian Revolution, where she was leading voice of the people’s revolution for democratic change. In this session, we tap into Aya’s experience, to see how we too can inspire revolutionary local and global climate action in our own writing. The second section talks about your first assignment for the second phase of the Adopt a Negotiator COP20 Fellows application process! CLIMATE TRACKER SKILL-UPS: What happened last week, what's coming up We mentioned that throughout the summer we would offer a series of voluntary 'Skill-ups' to dig into some of the skills that our Fellows use during the climate talks. In case you missed it, we hosted our first Climate Tracker Skill-up of 2014 last week. The session 'Writing a Revolution (http://adoptanegotiator.org/skill-up/writing-a-revolution/) ' tapped the skills and experience of Aya Chebbi who used her blog to help the world track and understand the Tunisian Revolution, and by veteran negotiator tracker Chris Wright. http://adoptanegotiator.org/skill-up/writing-a-revolution/ Aya reflected on her many experiences as a blogger, from the challenges of writing about polarizing issues to more straightforward best-practice techniques like utilizing multimedia and titles effectively. The conversation was led by Chris Wright, who shared his insights on blogging about the UNFCCC in particular, why it can be good to annoy governments, and how he applies the thinking of past revolutionaries like ████ Luther King Jr to his own new media work. The skill-up was enriched by questions from fellow 'climate trackers' watching live around the world, helping us dig into the blogging techniques that might work best in their particular circumstances. We'll also hear from two veteran trackers - Alex Lenferna from South Africa and Farrukh Zaman from Pakistan - about their experience using blogs and other communications tools to push governments, both inside and outside of the talks. In this first assignment, we want you to: Write a NEW blog about climate change... This piece can be about any aspect of climate change; local or global. It could be an interview with someone facing the impacts of climate change, or it could be about your local government and what they are doing to address it. It could be an update on international negotiations, or it could even be a commentary on one of the many news stories found in the Fresh Air Brief (http://adoptanegotiator.org/category/news-and-briefs/fresh-air-brief/) . I encourage you to pick a topic that will show us that you can understand climate challenges that are relevant to your country - and demonstrate that you can be a powerful voice advocating for solutions. Publish it on a website that is not your own... Next comes the hard part! You made it this far in the application process because we know that you can write a decent blog. You made it this far because we think you have a good grasp of the issues. But can you connect your knowledge and skills to a new audience? We think you can, and we think you should! So your assignment isn't just to write a great blog post, it's also to make your work count by getting it published online in a place where your ideas enter and shape the public debate surrounding the issue you choose. In this case, that means going beyond your typical audience and getting published on a website that is not your own. Complete your assignment by September 1st We're keeping the rules loose and giving you lots of time to complete this assignment. You can keep it simple and publish your work on a friend's blog, or really impress us by publishing your blog as an oped in a newspaper with a major readership. Anywhere is fine as long as your work is published on a site managed by someone other than you.
