I am writing to express my interest in applying for the position of Associate to a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory.

I graduated from the University of Nottingham with upper second-class honours in Law (with American Law) (LLB). As part of this degree, I completed a one year exchange at the University of Texas at Austin. I am currently studying a Masters of Environmental Law at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

I have previously shadowed a Crown Court Judge and completed two mini-pupillages at barristers’ chambers in the UK. I also worked as a Student Attorney on death penalty cases in Texas. These experiences have familiarised me with the judiciary and the courts, and have convinced me that I would enjoy, and excel, working in this setting.

I have demonstrated my strength in research by writing two theses as part of my studies. One of my theses was published and I have had two recent research articles approved for publication. I am currently working as a Research Assistant at the UNSW Law School and as a Paralegal in the corporate group at Freehills. I have also volunteered in a research capacity, as well as participated in mooting competitions and model United Nations.

I have not completed College of Law, however, I am willing to do so in order to fulfil this role. I feel that my experience, research skills and strong communication skills, together with my enthusiasm and diligence, make me an ideal candidate for this role.

ASSOCIATE TO A JUDGE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF THE

## AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

Expressions of interest are invited for the position of Associate to a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory. Appointments may not be made immediately but it is intended that a list be kept from which appointments may be made. Expressions of interest entered on the list will be current for one year from the date of receipt.

Vacancies are usually filled in December each year for commencement in January or February, however from time to time, vacancies occur throughout the year.

Applicants should have completed, or be near to completing a Bachelor of Laws degree and a Diploma in Legal Practice.

The Associate provides clerical research assistance to the Judge and attends court with him/her for the purpose of calling on cases, empanelling juries and recording details of proceedings. The successful applicant will be expected to carry out legal research, analyse transcripts of evidence and prepare summaries of evidence and draft findings of fact.

The successful applicant will be engaged as a temporary employee on a fixed term contract in the ACT Public Service for a term of one year. No extension of contract is possible. The gross annual salary of the position is currently $53,616.00. For Associate to the Chief Justice the gross annual salary is currently $59,800.00.
