I am writing to apply for the position of Strategic Policy Researcher at DeepMind. I am a motivated and passionate researcher with 8 years of experience working on environmental policy issues. I have a longstanding interest in AI and its possible ethical implications and am looking to take the next step in my career by bringing my skills to bear on these fascinating issues.

As a researcher working at the science-policy interface, I am able to quickly evaluate complex issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. I continually monitor ongoing research developments in a number of fields using a range of tools, including Mendeley and Google Scholar. In addition to tracking environmental technologies and policies, I have a personal interest in diverse topics, including nanotechnology and synthetic biology, neuroscience and psychology, and science communication. I have a longstanding interest in computing and AI and stay up-to-date through various podcasts and newsletters.

I have extensive experience in communicating results to different audiences. In addition to publishing 30 peer-reviewed papers on a range of environmental issues, I have written policy papers, books, submissions to government and regulatory bodies, media articles and press releases. I am able to interpret research for a range of audiences. For example, I run a popular weekly newsletter that brings developments in marine science and ocean exploration to the general public and I was recently contracted by Nature to write a comment piece informing marine scientists about ongoing UN negotiations. I am a confident public speaker and regularly speak at conferences, workshops, and invited lectures.

As a friendly and easy-going person, I quickly form effective working relationships with colleagues and collaborators. I am currently working on two large international policy projects for which I coordinate regularly with external funders and partners, including government agencies, research institutes and UN bodies. At the same time, I regularly undertake solo projects on my own initiative, write papers, and produce reports with limited oversight.

I am organized and efficient in my time management, using innovative tools to automate and simplify organizational tasks. I am an advanced user of all office programs, writing and citation management tools, web design software and programming languages, and social media platforms.
