Can you provide an example of when you have provided excellent customer service? What was the situation? What did you do and what was the outcome?

One one occasion, working at a large hotel and restaurant, the premises were booked for a wake. As with any large function, the event required hard work and attention to detail. However, this event demanded more due to its solemn nature. I worked efficiently and accurately, whilst remaining inconspicuous and sympathetic. In doing this, the attendees were given a first class service and the space they required.

How do you prioritise your day when you have been given a number of jobs to complete?

Where there are a number of jobs to complete, I first give priority to those tasks which have an immediate deadline. I then assess the importance of the tasks and complete them in that order. For instance, cleaning the front of house may take priority over taking stock, because the latter can be done out of store hours, whereas the store needs to be clean while customers are present.

What do you feel the benefits are of working with others?

Working with others allows the sharing of ideas and methods, and therefore one can learn much faster than by working alone. In addition, large or difficult tasks can be shared between a number of people. Finally, I feel there is a great benefit to morale that is gained by working in a team.

Can you give me an example of when you have dealt with a challenging situation? What was the situation? What action did you take and what was the result?

One evening I asked a young man for identification, in line with the law, believing him to be under 21. He would not present identification and I therefore refused to serve him alcohol. The customer became loud and abusive. I remained patient and quietly asked him to calm down. As the customer refused to calm down, I motioned for a colleague to call the manager. I explained the situation to the manager and the customer was asked to leave.
