I first met Glen when he was a postgraduate student at the University of New South Wales. He took a number of subjects I taught in the LLM at that university. I remember his work as a student specifically because I advised him that it was of such exceptional quality that I recommended he publish his work. Which he subsequently did. Subsequent to that I employed Glen as my research assistant. We have also co-authored publications together. Glen worked with me on several different research projects. There were two projects most relevant to the position you may employ him for. The first was research on conservation and the sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, with a particular focus on the marine genetic resources issue. His work on this project demonstrated great research skills and a thorough and methodical ability to critically analyse and reflect on a vast body of literature on the topic. As you know I have worked in this area for over a decade and I was impressed with Glens contribution to the research project. The second main area of research Glen worked with me on was law and policy relating to environmental governance issues associated with renewable energy generated from the oceans. In fact Glens own subsequent research in relation to ocean energy has built upon my own initial work and he is now, I believe, a leading international expert on this issue. He has published a number of peer reviewed articles on the topic based on his research, and has delivered papers at several conferences both in Australia and overseas. In addition he has provided expert advice to the Clean Energy Council here in Australia with respect to development of governance and regulatory options for marine energy in Australia Glen also contributed to a number of my research projects on renewable energy, nanotechnology and synthetic biology. Quite apart from this, I know Glen also has extensive experience in the development of policy proposals. For example, he has previously worked for the Total Environment Centre, which is one of Australia's leading independent environmental policy think tanks and advocacy groups. In summary therefore I would suggest Glen is an exceptionally talented researcher and policy advisor with considerable skills and experience. I believe he has an excellent understanding of oceans governance issues, and especially the ongoing debates in relation to marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. As discussed with ████, we would like to offer you an 18 month contract with a gross salary of 35 850€ per annum corresponding to a monthly gross of 2987€ and approximately 2 250-2 300€ net. As this is a short term contract, you will receive a 10% bonus at the end of the contract, calculated over the gross earned during the whole period worked (representing a lump sum of about 5 000 € gross).
