I am writing to apply for the position of trainee research officer at the Judicial Commission of New South Wales. I am currently studying a Master of Laws degree at the University of New South Wales. I am originally from the UK; my partner is Australian and our de-facto partner visa is currently in progress. It is our long-term plan to settle in Sydney.

I completed criminal law at undergraduate level at the University of Nottingham and have a strong interest in the subject. I have previously completed two mini-pupilages at criminal barristers’ chambers and spent two weeks shadowing a Crown Court Judge in the UK. During a year on exchange, I worked with the University of Texas Capital Punishment Clinic as a Student Attorney, assisting with the representation of clients on death row.

As a paralegal at Freehills I have gained wide-ranging experience in administration, research, and writing. I have frequently drafted memos for Partners regarding legislation and cases, and have recently had a case note published in the Corporate Law Bulletin.

I possess refined research skills and currently work as a Research Assistant to ██████ at the Initiative on Climate Change Law and Policy at the University of New South Wales. I have previously volunteered for the Activist Legal Project, researching issues relating to student activism, and received a starred first for my undergraduate thesis, the highest grade obtainable.

I am organised, hard working, and keen to improve my knowledge and learn new skills. I am highly competent with computers, as web design and computing have been longstanding hobbies of mine.
