As a passionate and determined renewable energy advocate with experience in law, policy and academia, I am an ideal candidate. Originally from the UK, I am currently a PhD candidate at the Australian National University (ANU), researching the regulation of the emerging wave and tidal energy industry. I have also lectured on energy policy at the ANU and have tutored students in Environmental Law. On a professional level, I have engaged with diverse stakeholders and analysed and applied energy law and policy in a range of contexts. I advised sophisticated corporate clients while working at a large international commercial law firm in the Energy and Resources group and currently work at a small non- governmental organisation, lobbying the government for cleaner energy policy. I have long been involved in advocacy, campaigning and volunteering. I organised a multidisciplinary conference on climate change solutions at my undergraduate university, assisted Amnesty International in ‘greening’ their head office in Australia, and volunteered for the Greens during a national election campaign. Recently I have represented the ANU at the Rio+20 conference and co-founded an innovative sustainable development zine/journal to provide a more accessible outlet for research students. I have excellent computer skills and am proficient in all office programs, imaging software, content management systems and HTML/PHP coding. I have a keen eye for detail and can present information appropriately using a wide range of tools, including desktop publishing, PowerPoint and Prezi. As an avid traveller and language learner, I would greatly enjoy working as part of an international team. I have studied in four countries and have worked with a diverse range of people, from a team of American lawyers and international students representing clients on Death Row at the University of Texas Capital Punishment Clinic, to tutoring students from developing countries as part of AusAID’s scholarship program. I will be in the UK undertaking a Visiting Scholar position and conducting primary research until August and would be well-positioned to commence at REN21 at the beginning of September. I have written a number of discussion papers and conducted research into key topics, including policy to support distributed energy, energy market reform, and demand management/energy efficiency. Recently I worked with a team of academics at the Australian National University (ANU) on a report to be delivered to Australia’s Regional Development Authority. While working as a Research Assistant at the University of New South Wales Initiative on Climate Law and Policy, I conducted research for Australia’s first textbook on renewable energy law and policy. I received the Dean’s Award during my graduate studies for placing top of the class in the Renewable Energy Law course. I have been instrumental in developing Renewable Energy Law courses at two of Australia’s leading universities, most recently leading the development of the Sustainable Energy Law graduate course at the ANU. As a result, I have been asked by the ANU’s Energy Change Institute to develop a Renewable Energy Law and Policy master-class program to be delivered to public servants. ### Communication I have a strong publishing record, which includes peer-reviewed articles, discussion papers, a forthcoming book chapter, and short, accessible articles in The Conversation. In 2011, I won the Environmental Defender’s Office writing competition, and last year was the runner-up in the National Environmental Law Association writing competition. I have honed my oral presentation skills over a number of years through debating, mooting and participation in Model United Nations. More recently I have presented at a number of conferences. I communicate effectively at all levels: at the Total Environment Centre I regularly liaise with government officials, regulators and stakeholders, while my PhD involves working with companies, academics and industry. I am approaching fluency in Spanish (CEFR C1), am at an intermediate level in Indonesian, and have weekly lessons and language exchanges in both. I recently started learning Chinese and am working towards the level two (of six) Chinese Government language exam. I am also familiar with Portuguese. I am passionate about learning languages and if selected for this position I would commit to learning French intensively prior to commencement to enable me to better connect with my colleagues and surroundings. IT skills I have a longstanding interest in computing and technology, and possess advanced computer skills. I am highly capable with all office programs, Photoshop and Dreamweaver; can code in HTML, PHP and CSS; and am familiar with many content management systems, including Wordpress, Joomla, and Drupal. I have created a number of websites, including my personal website, a website for Ambiente, a sustainable development journal run by Australian university students and the Folk Directory, a wiki-style database of live traditional music events. I am well versed in social media and have integrated this with my academic research, using Twitter and a blog to network and share my ideas. ### Attention to detail and presentation Working as a Paralegal for Freehills, a top-tier commercial law firm, I produced documents within tight deadlines, while maintaining clarity of expression and presentation. I regularly use these skills in publishing academic papers, ensuring that my writing is concise and precise. I always present my work in a way that is appropriate for the intended audience and use a range of tools to achieve this, including traditional desktop publishing and PowerPoint, as well as more innovative methods, such as Prezi. ### Working in an international team I am an avid traveller and language learner and would relish the opportunity to work with a diverse team in an international setting.
