Attendance at the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development as part of ANU’s student delegation

The Rio+20 Conference is set to be a seminal international gathering that will define the future of sustainable development and I have been selected to be part of the ANU’s student delegation.

Being part of this delegation involves writing a paper on my chosen theme and presenting it at a symposium, attending briefings before and during the conference regarding the Rio+20 process, and being actively involved in discussion and lobbying during the conference. The delegation will be meeting with other student delegations and I will also attend side-events relating to my area of interest - energy. In addition to the above activities, it is my intention to actively blog about the event as it progresses, and further develop my research paper into a full length paper for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

I am a PhD student working on renewable energy law and policy and I have a longstanding interest in sustainable development, particularly regarding energy issues. I have previously published papers regarding development and renewable energy, and hope to develop a career path that melds these two interests.

Attendance at this conference as part of the ANU’s student delegation is a unique opportunity to observe international policymaking firsthand, while making valuable contacts and networks that will help me in my future research and career development. Having previously attended a Model United Nations Conference, and having researched such international conferences, I am excited to have the opportunity to be personally involved in an important UN conference.

Internal travel: $100
Food, 8 days at $15: $120

Total: $1320

I have already paid for flights using my own savings, and will later pay for accommodation, internal travel and food. I have applied for funding from the College of Law using my PhD travel allowance, however, this allowance is intended for use for travel relating to the PhD thesis, whereas attendance at the Rio+20 conference is an extracurricular activity unrelated to my PhD.
