Experience and Knowledge of Community Volunteering: During my time at University, I have been an active member of the student community and have immersed myself in a number of volunteering projects. I founded and acted as President of the Vegetarian and Vegan Society, using my initiative to create and extend opportunities for community involvement. The society was awarded the Gold Award, the highest honour possible, by the Students' Union in its first year of existence. I also received an award for my 'Outstanding Personal Contribution'; one of a select few given each year. At the same time, I volunteered as the General Secretary of the Nottingham Student Peace Movement, a role that involved communicating with students and staff, attending and moderating meetings and organisation and promotion of events. I planned and managed a well-attended full-day conference on climate change. Finally, I was a key member of a group that set up a student allotment on campus. These roles demonstrate my ability to communicate effectively, organise, motivate and offer support to others and arrange and promote groups and events, as well as demonstrating outstanding time management skills, as I was balancing volunteering and activism with my full-time degree. Communication Skills: Attaining my Level One qualification in British Sign Language at the age of 10 instilled in me at a young age the drive to communicate effectively with others, and today I remain comfortable communicating with deaf people. My communication skills were further honed when I completed a night school course in counseling last year. The course was intensive and practical, involving a lot of group and one-to-one communication and public speaking. The course taught me how I could better communicate and empathise with a variety of people. In addition, I have completed a number of work experience placements during the course of my degree, each of which demonstrate my excellent communication skills, ability to build rapport and relationships and ability to organise and manage time effectively. I shadowed a Crown Court Judge for two weeks, a placement that required professionalism and decorum, along with punctuality and the ability to communicate with a range of court staff. I had to remain focused and knowledgeable about the case at hand, as the Judge frequently asked me questions or for my opinion. I applied similar skills during a mini-pupillage that I undertook at High Pavement Chambers in Nottingham, where I spent my time in court observing and discussing cases with my pupil master. I developed and extended this interest in public service and the law during the last academic year, which I spent on exchange in Texas, where I was part of the renowned Capital Punishment Clinic. As a student attorney I worked on a number of cases of death row inmates, which involved legal research, interviewing witnesses and jury members and thorough reading of many case documents, as well as visiting clients on death row. Computing, IT and Budgetary skills: Computers have been a personal interest and hobby of mine for a long time; in addition to being a confident web-designer and programmer, I am proficient with desktop publishing, word processing and graphics manipulation. In 2004 I created a website, the Folk Directory, to act as a database of live folk music events in the UK, a project which combines my passion for computing and community. The site has been very successful, growing to over 400 entries, each submitted by the public. In 2007 I received a grant from the Arts Council of England and Wales, as a recognition of my hard work and a financial incentive to continue to maintain and develop the site. Managing the money I received was essential because receipt of each installment was dependent upon adequate accounting for the previous installment. I am currently re-designing and streamlining the website, as well as working on further promotion.
