I would like to explore with a first small contract how this could work. I like the idea to add you to the team with a smaller contract on a consultancy basis. This is feasible on our end financially at the moment and can pave the way for a more closer cooperation in the long run. There are various dossiers at the moment that need some extra support, in particular the PSSA in Banc d'Arguin Mauritania, Belize Barrier Reef, there is the need for some general assistance in providing more content for the social media posts and potentiually the annual newsletter, and some initial follow up on the High Seas. Perhaps I can come over to IDDRI sometime this month to discuss - I havent been to IDDRI and it's a good way to also see where you work - it might be good to arrange my visit there to meet also with the head of the institution - overall it might be interesting to strengthen ties between our organizations. Through its World Heritage Marine Programme, established in 2005, UNESCO ensures that World Heritage Marine sites represent exemplary models of conservation and good governance, and provides capacity building and training, in addition to knowledge sharing and networking between site managers. For example, the Programme has established a network of site managers that provides networking opportunities and a space to share best practices and experiences. All three nations agreed to step up joint action to combat trafficking of this Mexican fish, which threatens the critically endangered vaquita often killed as bycatch. A week later, when Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Chinese President Xi Jinping met during the Summit of Emerging Economies and Developing Countries in Xiamen City, both leaders reiterated their commitment to the conservation of endangered species. This international cooperation embodies the spirit of World Heritage. ** IMPAC4 calls nations to strengthen conservation of World Heritage sites ------------------------------------------------------------ Earlier this month, we attended the Fourth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC4) in Chile. In partnership with the French Agency for Biodiversity, the World Heritage marine programme presented its latest research on climate impacts on the world's most iconic coral reefs, as well as World Heritage potential in the High Seas. The official IMPAC4 Call to Action urges stronger protection of World Heritage marine sites, thereby emphasizing the importance of the World Heritage network for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. ** East Rennell: Ministers commit to end logging to get off Danger List ------------------------------------------------------------ Following the first ever round table with customary owners and local communities of East Rennell last month, ministers of the Solomon Islands confirmed their commitment to ban all logging in the World Heritage marine site. East Rennell was inscribed on the World Heritage List in Danger in 2013 because of logging, invasive rats and over-exploitation of its marine resources. Following our technical mission in 2015, the country submitted a desired state of conservation that set the conditions to get off the Danger List. This move is the first major step forward. So we'll be there in spirit :) The decision on our major proposal has been postponed to 5 December. This was purely for administrative reasons (it's a new foundation that is being established). Our proposal is still part of the final selection and has all chances to go ahead - its no sure thing off course but we worked very closely with the donor to make the proposal so would be strange if it doesn't come through. But we'll have to wait a little longer to get the outcome. We submitted a big proposal for our managers work last month but competition is extremely high here so don't want to raise expectations too much- we'll have the outcome of this first week of February. Also here I inscribed a budget for you. We're also in talks with several other countries to strengthen relationships with quite some good prospects here too. All of which also will be late this or early next year when we'll know outcomes. You should know that I'm also keeping a seat & a desk warm in the hope we can soon bring you to the programme - there is now a consultant there with a contract until end January and my aim is that you take in that position afterwards.
