Setting sail
The art of boatbuilding in many coastal societies has historically been passed down from master to apprentice. But this art is slowly disappearing as young apprentices find more attractive work in other industries. Now many projects around the world are trying to recover the traditions. A new film, Vanishing sail, chronicles the journey of boat maker Alwyn Enoe as he crafts his final creation. The movie is now available on Vimeo.
Subsea soundscapes
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute installed a microphone 900 meters (3,000 feet) below the surface of the ocean in Monterey Bay (California). It is now broadcasting live. Learn more here.

  • 3rd Atlantic Ocean Award: The Atlantic Project Awards will grant 5 projects that come under the umbrella of the Atlantic Strategy and Action Plan Priorities, as recognition of outstanding performance in relevant areas/sectors.
  • European Maritime Day: Burgas will host the 2018 edition on 31 May and 1 June. The European Maritime Day (EMD) is the annual meeting point for Europe’s maritime community to network, discuss and forge joint action. 
  • Youth Leadership Summit: The Sustainable Ocean Alliance is taking applications for the Our Ocean Youth Summit in Bali, Indonesia.
