hike
We climbed to the top of an unfamiliar hill
with a flag and a guest book
and a soft déjà vu.
In the expansive view
i was all but forgotten,
but the parched earth
somehow remembered you.
Each step seemed to delete
a thought
i didn’t know
i was ready to lose.
At times you walked a few steps ahead,
i looked back
and found that no world followed.
Or you were a few steps behind,
not trying to hide your fear of falling,
and with your footsteps near,
the path forward
was mine to clear.
